FACULTY PROFILE

K. A. Athmaselvi is a Professor at the Center for Excellence in Grain Science, Department of Food Process Engineering, National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Thanjavur. She holds a B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering from Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth and an M.E. in Agricultural Processing from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Food Process Engineering from SRM Institute of Science and Technology.

She began her academic career as a Lecturer at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women (1999–2004). She subsequently served as Professor and Head of the Department of Food Process Engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology for over 15 years. She has extensive experience in teaching, research, and academic administration, and has guided numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Dr. Athmaselvi is a certified Preventive Control Qualified Individual (PCQI) Lead Instructor and has published several research papers in reputed journals. She has organized multiple national and international conferences and workshops and has filed three patents.

She has successfully secured research funding from leading agencies, including the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Department of Science and Technology (DST-SHRI), Food Corporation of India (FCI), and Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, demonstrating strong engagement in applied and industry-relevant research.

She is the recipient of the Best Scientist Award conferred by the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, R. N. Ravi, recognizing her significant contributions to food process engineering and grain science.

Dr. Athmaselvi has actively contributed to capacity building and extension activities by conducting specialized training programs on rice milling, millet milling, parboiling of paddy and millets, and quality evaluation of grains for industry professionals, farmers, and stakeholders. She has gained international exposure through academic visits to the University of Nottingham under the Erasmus mobility programme, specialized training on rice milling in Japan, and serving as an external examiner at Harare Institute of Technology.

Her research focuses on:

  • Advanced thermal processing techniques such as Ohmic Heating and microwave processing
  • Parboiling of paddy and millets
  • Quality analysis and evaluation of rice and grains
  • Value addition in rice- and millet-based products
