Dr. N. Venkatachalapathy, Professor and Head

Dr N. Venkatachalapathy is a Professor in the Department of Food Engineering and Chairman of the Working Group on Grain Sciences at the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology, Thanjavur, India. He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1990 and his Master of Engineering in Post-Harvest Technology in 1992 from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. After completing a Master degree, he joined this institute as Workshop Engineer in 1993. He has worked as a Scientist from 1999 to 2013. He received his PhD degree from Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu in 2012. At present he is the Professor and Head of the Department of Food Engineering. He is a Life Member of Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers and Association of Food Scientists and Technologists. Also, he is a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).

Research Interests

The primary focus of his recent research work has been directed towards addressing the problems of farmers and primary processors at farm level. This includes the development of gadgets for value addition and increasing the income level of farmers and processors at the farm level. Also, his research interest is on cold storage and drying of farm produce. He teaches Unit Operations in Food Process Engineering, Transport Processes, Cold storage Engineering, Processing of Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds, Spices and Plantation crops.
