Specialization :Storage Entomology
Dr. Loganathan obtained his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Agricultural Entomology from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, in 1999. For his Doctoral dissertation, he worked on "Evaluation of Bacillus thuriengensis for the management of lepidopteran pests in chickpea and cauliflower”. He had also worked on the evaluation of sex pheromones for the management of Helicoverpa armigera in cotton for his master’s dissertation. Loganathan has been serving this Institute since 1999. He handles national and international research projects on grain storage, monitoring of stored product insects, and management of insects in food products. He also provides consultancy and handles industry projects on insect management.
During his tenure, he conducted research in areas related to the management of stored product insects in grain storage. He has developed technologies for controlling psocids in grain storage. He had developed methods for thermal disinfestation of paddy using solar energy. He had also handled a DST-sponsored project on “Design and Development of Solar Photovoltaic Powered Cold Storage System” in collaboration with NIT, Trichy. He has widely published his research findings in national and international journals and conferences. He has edited a book on “Non-chemical Methods for Disinfestation of Stored Products” (CRC Press).
He was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, for a period of six months from May 2010 to October 2010. During that time, he worked on the “Effect of low and high temperatures on Callosobruchus maculatus in chickpea”. He is also experienced in thermal disinfestation of flour mills. He has trained for GMP, HACCP, and Internal Auditing by the Manitoba Food Safety Knowledge Centre, Winnipeg, Canada. He has visited the University of Queensland, Australia, for the workshop in the project on "Ensuring Food Security: Harnessing Science to Protect Our Grain Harvest from Insect Threat” in 2010 and 2012. He attended and presented a research paper in the 11th International Working Conference on Stored Product Protection (IWCSPP 2014) held at Chiang Mai, Thailand during 2015.
As project Co-PI, he visited Brunel University, London, to attend the meeting of DBT sponsored Indo-UK collaborative project on “Grain Care” during January 2018. He visited the University of Guelph, the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and various Canadian food industries in November 2022. He also attended the first-ever international event, Plant Forward - Canada’s plant-based ingredient & food supply and innovation.
He also conducts many outreach programmes, seminars, and workshops at many places across the country to popularize food processing and storage for stakeholders. He is also doing consultancy for the industries to manage the insects in their grain and food product storage.
His areas of specialization are Grain Storage and Stored Product Insect Management. He guides students of Master’s and Doctorate in the areas related to Food Processing, Grain storage, and pest management.
Dr. Loganathan served in different administrative positions in NIFTEM-T, including Director i/c, Dean (Academics and Student Welfare)i/c, Warden, and presently serving as Dean (Academics).
Dr. Loganathan served as a member of various high-level committees, which include:
- Serving as a Member of the Board of Governance of NIFTEM-T.
- Serving as a Member of the Senate of NIFTEM-T
- Served / Serving as Chairperson and Member of various committees viz., Institute Management Committee, Purchase Committee, Scrutiny Committee, Staff Selection Committee, etc.
- Serving as the Chairperson of the Board of Studies of UG/PG Degree Programmes of NIFTEM-T.
- Served in the Board of Studies of the Department of Entomology/ Zoology in different Universities
