FACULTY PROFILE
Prof. S. Vignesh is an accomplished academic, researcher, and innovation leader with over 15 years of experience in Food and Environmental Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Functional Foods, Food Safety, and Nanobiotechnology. He is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Food Safety and Quality Assurance at the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM–Thanjavur), an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. He obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Microbiology from Bharathidasan University. His research focuses on functional biotics (probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics), food fermentation, food safety, microbial biotechnology, sustainable food processing, nutraceuticals, and nanotechnology for food and health applications.
Prof. Vignesh has established himself as a productive researcher through the successful execution of externally funded research projects, significant contributions to scientific innovation, and a strong intellectual property portfolio comprising ten published patents and three granted patent. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed research articles, five books, and over 25 book chapters in leading international publications, with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 200. His scholarly contributions have earned wide international recognition, reflected by an h-index of 25, i10-index of 44, and more than 2,000 citations on Google Scholar, alongside a strong presence on ResearchGate with over 36,000 reads, 1,800 citations, and an h-index of 24. He has successfully mentored and supervised more than 50 undergraduate and postgraduate research dissertations, while currently guiding several M.Tech. and Ph.D. scholars. He also serves as a doctoral thesis evaluator, examiner, and viva-voce expert for several reputed universities and research institutions across India.
Beyond research, Prof. Vignesh has made substantial contributions to academic leadership, institutional governance, technology transfer, and capacity building. Since joining NIFTEM–Thanjavur in 2019, he has held several key administrative positions, including Head of the Technology Dissemination Department, Chairman of multiple institutional committees, Coordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Technology Transfer activities, Institution's Innovation Council (IPR Division), and Rotaract Club, besides serving in numerous academic, research, recruitment, procurement, accreditation, and institutional development committees. He has successfully organized more than 25 national and international workshops, conferences, and training programmes, participated in over 50 scientific events, and delivered more than 75 invited lectures on emerging areas of food science, fermentation technology, food safety, and biotechnology. His professional expertise and research contributions are internationally recognized through his profiles on Scopus, Web of Science, ORCID, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, IRINS, and ResearcherID, reflecting his commitment to advancing scientific excellence, innovation, and sustainable solutions for the global food and health sectors.
