NIFTEM-T

Director's Message

Over the years, the significance of food processing and value addition is being increasingly realized. Apart from daily diets, a holistic view considers its role in both food and nutritional security. This explains the rising demand for food technology interventions, a highly interdisciplinary field with emerging interests.

The National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management - Thanjavur (NIFTEM-T) is an Institute of National Importance functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. Over the years, we have expanded our mandates – from an R&D laboratory to finding solutions for post-harvest preservation of paddy located at Thiruvarur - TN in 1967, to Paddy Processing Research Center (PPRC) to Indian Institue of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) to Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) to what we are now – NIFTEM-Thanjavur. This journey has witnessed major milestones in research, academic excellence, outreach, and services. Apart from our main campus at Thanjavur, we have our liaison offices at Bathinda and Guwahati, primarily focusing on skill development and outreach.

With the INI status, our responsibilities have also become bigger and NIFTEM-Thanjavur is all set to make the best contributions to stakeholders at various levels and segments of the food processing sector. The institute has strong national and international collaborations to support and handhold activities. Our students are performing exceptionally well and our alumni are located across the globe. With growing industry partnerships, the institute aims to serve as the one-stop solution for multidimensional technological solutions for the country.

Our research focus has been on cutting-edge technologies, in addition to catering to local and regional needs, and those that are pressing requirements for the country. The team at NIFTEM-Thanjavur is vibrant and activities are heavily demand-driven. To support our activities, we are equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities, including our NABL accrediated FSSAI referral laboratory, food processing business incubation center with pilot-scale processing facilities, centers for excellence in nonthermal processing and grain sciences, school of sensory sciences, center for glycemic index studies, food packaging testing center, and other advanced processing and testing facilities.

At this juncture, I thank all our well-wishers for their strong support. I also acknowledge the numerous funding agencies and collaborating partners in our many different endeavors. I invite you to come visit NIFTEM-Thanjavur and to be a part of our great vision!

Best regards,
